Applecross Placenames Project

Placename

Gaelic name: Sràid, An t-

Name in Original Source: Shore Street

English meaning: Shore Street

Placename feature: Settlement

Notes: Apparently, this street never had an original Gaelic name. It was a row of houses constructed in or around the period 1800 to 1820 when the estate was being 'improved'. These houses were owned by the Applecross Estate to provide housing for its workers. No Gaelic equivalent name appears in print, but it is referred to as An t-Sràid by local Gaelic speakers. In a number of 19th-century census returns this settlement was also referred to as Milton Gardens.
