Placename

Gaelic name: Corran, An

Name in Original Source: Corran, An

English meaning: The corran

Placename feature: Shore

Notes: Unclear exactly how (often) this name was used. It refers to the shoreline, or curve of rocky shoreline, that was re-engineered in around 1814, to make up the sheltered harbour of Camas Tearach pier. When boats would be on their outhaulers there, they would be said to be '... air a' Chorran.' [Information from Sandy Cameron, 24/10/2008]

Dwelly's Gaelic dictionary: Point of land running far into the sea.

W. J. Watson's notes: 248: (Of Corran Chill Donnain, Kildonan Point) Corran is very common along the west coast in this sense, and is usually found at the horn of a small bay. [This seems to fit with the Camas Tearach usage.]
