Applecross Placenames Project

Placename

Gaelic name: Seann Ghead, An t-

Name in Original Source: An seanna gead

English meaning: The old rig/arable patch

Placename feature: Arable land

Notes: A place name survey by Applecross Historical Society, c.1999, puts this place in the vicinity of An t-Sràid. Its exact location is unclear, but prior to the construction of the current Applecross school in 1873, the main school in the south of the peninsula was actually in Baile a' Mhuilinn, in the house currently (2012) known as Sanctuary Cottage. It is likely that An t-Seann Ghead would have been nearby. It was also apparently known by the alternate name: Lios a' mhaighstir-sgoile
