Placename

Gaelic name: Losaid, An

Name in Original Source: An Losaid

English meaning: The Kneading Trough

Placename feature: Field

Notes: This name is applied to a field immediately to the south of Allt Shardail, and it was traditionally regarded as probably the most fertile field on the Applecross farm lands, if not in the whole peninsula. Roy Wentworth's Gaelic words and phrases from Wester Ross, 420: (In place-names apparently refers to a fertile field). It is also mentioned in a recording made by Ian Fraser for the Scottish Place Name Survey in May 1971 [Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. LVII, 210] - check if there are two in Applecross, one in Milltown?. On Applecross Estate map of c.1810, although it is not named at all, it is clearly marked as part of the ground of Ach' a' Choirce (q.v.)
