Applecross Placenames Project

Placename

Gaelic name: Garbh-poll [?]

Name in Original Source: Garabul

English meaning: Rough pool [?]

Placename feature: Field

Notes: Referred to as Garbold on an estate map of c.1810, the place name meaning is unclear. It is a name applied to a field between the site of Applecross House and the Applecross river. There is another Garabul/Garabol near Arrochar. It possibly contains a Norse element - garðr - meaning field.

It has also been suggested that the name may have originally related to a pool on the river, indeed to the river itself, rather than to a field. Hence, 'garbh-poll', rough pool
