Placename

Gaelic name: Geat' an Darkie

Name in Original Source: Geata an Darkie

English meaning: Darkie's gate

Placename feature: Man-made

Notes: This name may not be the most politically correct one recorded, but it is believed to date from the early twentieth century. The identity of the Darkie is unknown. The gate was on the junction which led from the main road between Camas Terrach and Baile a' Mhuilinn, and the township of Camas Teile, and would have been to stop cows (especially, but sheep, too) wandering from one township to another. It is approximately 100 metres north of the Applecross primary school
