Applecross Placenames Project

Placename

Gaelic name: Creag an Fhithich (2)

Name in Original Source: Creag an Fhithich (2)

English meaning: Raven's rock

Placename feature: Rock

Notes: The following appears in the notebooks of the famous folklorist Alexander Carmichael, 19th September 1909, which indicate that this must be a different name to Creag an Fhithich (1). It may be that this second place with this name is somewhere in the south of the Applecross peninsula as previous entries refer to a woman in Toghsgaig:

Creag an Fhithich – north end

of rock has letter of some sort on

the rock. No person has been able

to make out what the writing is. There

are two parallel caves both very

deep – one inacessible [sic]. The other

had been lived in – full of shells.
