Placename
Gaelic name: Crua' ruigh
Name in Original Source: Cruarg
English meaning: Hard slope
Placename feature: Settlement
Notes: More often rendered 'Cruary' in English, this name refers to what may have been a small farm settlement in former times. It looks over Applecross Bay, from the lower slopes of what becomes Beinn a' Chlachain. Ian Fraser's recording (PN1971.016B) for the Scottish Place Name Survey has the informant referring to this place as a feminine noun - A' Chrua' ruigh - in contradiction to what W.J. Watson records in Place Names of Ross and Cromarty
W. J. Watson's notes: 205: An Crua'ruigh - Hard slope, west of the manse.
