Placename
Gaelic name: Dòrnaidh, An
Name in Original Source: Dòrnaidh, An
English meaning: Narrow sea channel
Placename feature: Beach
Notes: This was the name for the area of beach that ebbed dry allowing people to cross from Eilean Mòr Chròlaig to Eilean Meadhanach Chròlaig. Duncan Murchison, 24th October 2012, knew of this name having heard it from the late Colin Gordon who was a sgalag (workman, ploughman, herd, etc.) as a young man on Eilean Mòr, in much the same way as well-known Applecross characters John MacLeod ('Ain Ruadh, originally from the Isle of Harris) and Donald Finlayson (Saighdear). According to Dwelly's Gaelic dictionary, dòrnaidh means: Narrow channel of the sea, where it flows and ebbs, and where at full tide, a vessel can be towed to either side of the harbour.
