Placename

Gaelic name: Druim a' Chlachain

Name in Original Source: Druim a' Chlachain

English meaning: Ridge of the Clachan

Placename feature: Township

Notes: A long lost and virtually forgotten cottar township, it was where Eilidh Dàsan, sister of the murdered Applecross Estate gardener William Dawson, lived towards the end of her life. It is also mentioned in a song. Kenneth Macrae, F.S.A., says: DRUMCLAUGHAN. This place was next to Auchmoir on the south side of the river. It was on the higher ground which forms a ridge between Applecross House and Allt Beag. It was tenanted until the general clearances of 1800 when it was added to the Home Farm.

This place is referred to in the song 'Òran leis a' bhàrd Murchadh Mac Mhathain do nighean Fear na Comraich'. The song starts with the line: Oidhche dhomhsa ’n druim a’ chlachain nan clach snaidhte stèidhte.

However, there were also ruins and traditions of dwellings on the top of the slope on the north side of the church at Clachan, underneath Beinn a' Chlachain, so it could be that the name refers to this place. There are also traditions of a Norse settlement in the vicinity (on what seems to be a raised beach)
