Placename

Gaelic name: Faing a' Dols

Name in Original Source: Faing a' Dols

English meaning: Dol's fank

Placename feature: Agricultural feature

Notes: Fank, south of Slochd outside dyke. [Dr Alexander K. Gillies' list compiled for the Applecross Historical Society, date unknown] On Toscaig ground, the fank was built by Toscaig crofters from an idea of Donald Gordon, Duncan Murchison's grandfather, who was known as Dols, a diminutive form of the name Dòmhnall. Duncan Murchison remembers clipping himself in this fank. Also known as Faing Sloc na Beiste by some people, it was relatively easy to construct because it already had natural cliff walls on three sides
