Placename

Gaelic name: Fèithe Mhòr (1)

Name in Original Source: Fèithe Mhòr (1)

English meaning: Big vein or Big channel

Placename feature: Ditch

Notes: This refers to a ditch that runs through the north end of Roan Thoghsgaig (q.v.) before then turning south to run parallel to the main road on the way down past Am Baile Shìos and Ceann a' Chladaich before entering the sea. Information from Phemie Fraser, 3rd August 2012. She specifically said it was the ditch, which is long and narrow and resembles a vein running down an arm. The word fèithe can also mean a bog or boggy area, but in this case, the area in question is not particularly damp or boggy; rather it skirts good croft land.

Roderick Gillanders in speaking to the Scottish Place Name Society (PN1971.016A) in May 1971 calls this Na Feithichean Mòra, so the name needs further investigation
