Placename

Gaelic name: Fuaran Dearg

Name in Original Source: Fuaran Dearg

English meaning: Red well

Placename feature: Well

Notes: The Fuaran Dearg is a small spring just above the high-tide mark on the north shore of the inlet at An Caman. The water had a particular taste and tinge, which gave the spring its name. It is possible that this may have been due to an iron deposit in the rocks. On her deathbed, tradition has it that Alister Gillies' aunt Barbara Gillies from Cuil Duibh a' Chill (known as Barabra, died 16th February 1929, aged 76) asked for a drink from Fuaran Dearg
