Placename

Gaelic name: Clach na h-Àirighe

Name in Original Source: Clach na h-Àirighe

English meaning: Stone of the shieling

Placename feature: Stone/rock

Notes: This place name relates to a feature on the path towards Poll Domhainn Beag as you head away from the cross-roads on the road towards An Àird Dhubh [Dr Alexander K. Gillies' list compiled for the Applecross Historical Society, date unknown, co-ordinates are approximate as actual location is not precisely recorded]

In a further note to this list, it is written that: GA gives the name as Clais, a hollow. GA is probably the late Mrs Grace Ann MacBeath (1915-2005) who was born and raised in An Àird Dhubh

Alison MacLeod recorded the name as Clais na h-Aìridh (sic) in 2003 in a survey for Applecross Historical Society, with the note: Hollow of the shieling. (In the glen on the road to Coillegillie and Ardbain)

On balance, with two sources giving Claisas the root of the first name element, it should probably be accepted that it is in fact Clais na h-Àirighe
