Placename

Gaelic name: Coire Sgamadail

Name in Original Source: Coire Sgamhadail

English meaning: Short dale corrie

Placename feature: Corrie

Notes: Applecross Estate Sale Brochure, July 1887: [Named as Corrie Scamerdale in this document.] The third beat is known as Corrie Scamerdale, and is reached by a drive of five miles, thence walk half a mile. It includes four corries on the west side of Ben-y-Bhein, viz. Corrie-na-ba (the cow corrie), Corrie-na-Narig, Shieling Corrie, and Corrie Caorachan, a high, narrow corrie with good grass. They are all large corries, extending from the shores of Loch Kishorn to the top of the mountain, and are about two miles wide; they are all well clothed with grass and are regularly frequented by the deer. The Scamerdale ground, as a whole, is first rate for stalking, but the wide, open character of Corrie-na-Narig tests the skill of the sportsman in a greater degree.

W. J. Watson's notes: 204: Applecross Mains ... A third Norse name in dale is Coire Sgamadail, Corry of Scamadale, from N. Skam-dalr, Short-dale. It is west from Coire nan àradh, Ladder Corry.
