Applecross Placenames Project

Placename

Gaelic name: Còs, An

Name in Original Source: An Còs

English meaning: The cave/The hollow

Placename feature: Township

Notes: A small settlement on the south-east side of the Applecross peninsula, a short distance north of An Àirigh Dhriseach(q.v.) Here, some members of the Cameron family lived in the 19th century before moving to Ardneaskan by Lochcarron. Here, by the shore there is a sort of hollow created by a raised lump of rock, and immediately adjacent to it is a flat area which looks to have been cultivated or cleared at one time, with what appears to be the remains of a building and a boundary wall
