Placename

Gaelic name: Canada

Name in Original Source: Canada

English meaning: Canada

Placename feature: Croftland

Notes: At the top of Mrs Cathy Johnstone's croft in the township of cfA' Cheannmhor is an area called Canada. The name presumably dates from after the beginning of emigrations by Highlanders to what is now known as Canada. Mrs Johnstone suggested that it may have been because the top end of the croft was (relatively) far away from the houses in the township. Alternatively, the area was very fertile and crops grew well there, with the corn often looking a very lush yellow. This latter etymology ties in with how names such as cfManitoba came to be used in other locations where crops grew well
