Placename
Gaelic name: Caraidh Mhòr [A' Charaidh Mhòr]
Name in Original Source: Caraidh Mhòr
English meaning: Big fish trap
Placename feature: Man-made feature
Notes: Although dictionaries give this as a masculine noun, in a recording made by Ian Fraser for the Scottish Place Name Survey (PN1971.016B), his informant gives the name as a feminine noun. In other words, A' Charaidh Mhòr, rather than An Caraidh Mòr. This name relates to a very visible man-made structure, a vast former fishtrap on teh north-east corner of Applecross Bay. The stone foundation is still to be seen extending out from the shore in a semi-circle. IT is said that the main structure may have been made of hazel rods, or willow
