Notes: This name appears on an Applecross Estate map of c.1810. It is in what is marked on the map as a forested area between the shoreline south of the Cairidh and the fields of Sardal. Bield is an Old English word; as a noun it means a shelter or refuge, and as a verb it is the act of taking shelter. The noun is used in Chapter 24 of Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped.
