Placename

Gaelic name: Bo' Dubh

Name in Original Source: Bo' Dubh

English meaning: Black reef

Placename feature: Sunken rock

Notes: Not named on OS 1880 Sheet CXVI, except that it has Beacon written on it. Appears on some Admiralty charts. An old chart says 'Bo Du', but the meaning is clear. It lies almost in the centre of the entrance to Loch Toscaig, and is mentioned, as 'Beacon Rock', in Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness (Vol. 26) as being the place where a mysterious light was seen on Hallowe'en in former times. According to Rhoda Cameron, 27/12/2000), the Murchison brothers hit this reef while sailing in to Toscaig, probably in the early 20th century, prompting their father to say, either sarcastically or despairingly, 'Sgiobairean an fhaidh, bhuail sibh a' chlach far an d' rugadh sibh.'
