Notes: The retaining wall in front of the houses on the shore of the township of An Àird Dhubh are protected by Am Briost. The word is Scots meaning breastworks on a harbour, etc., whereas the wall around the township would be a gàrradh. The Scots National Dictionary relates that briost means 'the cobbled slipway forming teh front of a harbour'.
