Placename

Gaelic name: Allt na h-Eirbhe

Name in Original Source: Allt na h-Eirigh

English meaning: Stream of the wall

Placename feature: Stream

Notes: On the OS 1880 Sheet XCI, this stream is named Allt na h-Airidhe Mòire (sic). Local fishermen used it as one of a pair of locators for a fishing mark where it enters the sea south of Cùaig (q.v.) It is possible that rather than the element àirigh, this name actually references the genitive form of the word eirbh, meaning a wall, a boundary. Another possibility is that it is Allt na h-Earba (stream of the roe deer).

The fishing boat Isa took wood to the shoreline below this location in approximately 1971 so that a bridge could be built over this stream. A bridge is still visible from the road.
