Placename

Gaelic name: Allt nan Corp

Name in Original Source: Allt nan Corp

English meaning: Stream of the bodies

Placename feature: Stream

Notes: The Stream of the Bodies'. A burn which it flows downhill from its source in Loch a' Chaisteil, runs beside the Culduie fank and the NG reference is where it issues into the sea. The name is believed to come from the practise of putting clay figures, to represent people, on to shelves or ledges under the bridge. The passage of time and the effects of waters in spate would wear away the clay, and also, by magical means, the person the figure represented. Another interpretation of the name’s meaning came from Annie MacDonald in October 2006. She suggested that it was the first major resting place for people carrying coffins from Toscaig to Clachan
