Placename
Gaelic name: Amaran, Na h-
Name in Original Source: Amaran
English meaning: The Troughs
Placename feature: Pool
Notes: An area of ground west of Applecross River, extending towards Crua' ruigh, where the ground starts to get steep. The name is generally transliterated in English today as The Hammers, but it really means the troughsor the pools. These pools were more prevalent in the days before the low-level coast road towards Shieldaig was built (and opened in September 1976). Tarring of the road that existed in the 1950s is locally blamed for bringing in whin bushes which never used to grow in the vicinity. (Rory Cameron, 21st March 2012)
