Placename
Gaelic name: Bealach na Bà
Name in Original Source: Bealach na Bà
English meaning: Pass of the cow
Placename feature: Pass
Notes: One of the most well-known but most contentious names connected to the Applecross peninsula. Some say: Bealach na Bà, the pass of the cow (singular). Some say: Bealach nam Bò, the pass of the cattle (plural). There is even a suggestion to the Scottish Place Name Survey, May 1971 (PN1971.017) that the name should be: Bealach an Aba, the abbot's pass. It is certainly clear that this was a traditional route out of Applecross for cattle drovers
W. J. Watson's notes: 214: Am Bealach - The gap or pass, or Bealach nam Bò, Pass of Kine, is the name of that remarkable road, rising among barren rocks and frowning recipices to a height of 2054 feet, which affords the only means of entrance to Applecross by land
