Placename

Gaelic name: Allt Caoin

Name in Original Source: Allt Caoin

English meaning: Gentle [?] Stream

Placename feature: Stream

Notes: On the 1905 edition of this map, the name for this feature is given as Allt Loch a' Choire Bhuidhe (q.v.), a stream which eventually flows into Abhainn a' Chràicich (q.v.) In Wentworth's Gaelic words and phrases from Wester Ross, the word caoin is defined as meaning 'inside', as in caoin air ascaoin (ínside-out'); while caoineachdainn is meanwhile defined as meaning both 'curing' or 'drying', and caoinich as a verb meaning 'to dry'.

It should be noted that the Ordnance Survey name book gives this name as meaning: Mild stream.
